April is a great month for many reasons. Spring is finally here with warmer temperatures, local Brooklyn restaurants and bars start serving outside, winter boots are put away to make room for sandals and flats, and Earth Day is finally upon us. This year marks Earth Day’s 44 anniversary and lucky for us, there are many ways to celebrate and make a difference. While we can’t plant a tree or set up a recycling program here on the blog, DNA Footwear has pulled together a handful of brands that are doing their part to produce environmentally conscious shoes. Whether using recycled packaging or utilizing sustainable materials, the brands and shoes listed here can help you feel good about your environmental impact.
And as for shopping in stores, remember that by reusing the DNA Footwear tote (pictured above) when making your purchase in person gives you a 10% discount on your purchase.
Birkenstocks are back and are all the craze this spring. The great news is that in addition to being the hottest trend, Birkenstocks are also one of the most environmentally friendly shoe brands you can invest in. The Birkenstock shoe uses cork, a natural substance, as the soles for all of their shoes. Pictured here is the new arrival Gizeh Comfort Flat Thong Sandal featuring a cork sole.
The Vans Surf Slider collection is also constructed with the environment in mind. In the Surf Sliders line, Vans has chosen to use recycled PET (a chemical often used in the production of plastic bottles) as a major material in their shoes. In addition, the company uses hemp uppers, water based glues, as well as EVA and/or bamboo in the foot beds of the shoes. Look cool and eco-friendly by wearing these Mohikan Nordic Moccasin Slip On Shoes.
RENEU shoes are a great option for those looking for style and environmentally conscious footwear. Their shoes are made with the brand’s signature Lycra covered memory foam insoles and eco-friendly upper materials such as hemp, recycled polyester, ultra-suede and other earth friendly, vegan materials. These adorable leather print Tembla Ballet Flat shoe are the perfect treat for this Earth Day.
Another shoe brand that uses recycled PET is the Timberland Earthkeepers collection. Timberland uses recycled PET in their products for everything from linings, laces, uppers and insulation, to faux shearling and even the backing of faux fur. This Savin Hill Chukka Boot is one of the boots from the Earthkeepers line.
Mel, the offshoot brand of Melissa shoes, are another option. You won’t loose your femininity while working to wear more environmentally friendly shoes with this brand. The shoes are all non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, cruelty-free, and vegan. This Honey III Floral Jelly Flat Thong Sandal in pink and red is a great summer find.
Børn shoes are another great option for comfortable, stylish and environmentally conscious shoes. All of the Børn shoes are hand-sewn, therefore using less adhesives, cements, and internal components. In addition, instead of man made dyes, their leathers are tanned using all-natural vegetable dyes and their shoe details are organic rather than synthetic or plastic. The Kates Low Wedge Ankle Strap Sandal, pictured above, is one of the great Earth friendly examples.
